Criminal Investigative Division
The Shannon County Missouri Sheriff's Office is dedicated to solving crimes to bring closure to victims of the county. We have dedicated staff that specialize in investigative skills and forensics, to ensure a added layer of resolution in criminal investigations.

A Detective is tasked with taking a Patrol Deputy's initial investigation and refining it. Deputies often act as a second set of eyes and a fresh perspective. Detectives attempt to fill in the gaps, when a Deputy is unable to complete a case on their own. Reasons that a Detective may assist in a active investigation might include but are not limited to:
-
Deputy has reached the end of their shift and now the Detective will try to complete the investigation while they are away.
-
The Detective has a skill or certification that is unique and benefits the case.
-
The Subject is on a 24 hour investigative hold, and a extra investigator is needed to collect evidence on this serious crime, before the 24 hours is over.
-
The case may take a large amount of time and attention to complete correctly. The Deputy must return to patrol services, so the Detective does the extra leg work for him.
These are just a few of the reasons why Deputies are such a vital part of the team. This is a added layer of dedication to ensuring the citizens of Shannon County receive the very best we can possibly offer.

Forensics
Forensics is simply a wonderful tool, whereas an Investigator has extra tools in their toolbox to collect harder to find clues. We mentioned above, lack of personnel is the number one reason cases go cold. The second reason is lack of evidence to point a Investigator in the right direction. Having staff trained in collecting, preserving and analyzation of evidence increases the probably determining a subject of interests as well as collecting enough proof to reach the probably cause standard we must achieve to be successful.

Evidence
A Detectives we collect evidence. But who inventories that evidence? Who packages and labels the evidence? Who is the custodian of the evidence? Detectives are responsible for the evidence.

Interviews
About 80% of information that Detectives receive is from conducting interviews. That is speaking with suspects, victims, and witnesses.

What is a Detective
A Detectives primary goal is they have the time and resources to investigate crimes very thoroughly. Experts estimate there are approximately 240,000 unsolved homicides in the United States. This is largely due to the lack of personnel that can be dedicated to a case for a long period of time. Having an on staff Detective gives us the ability to continue investigations until they reach their final conclusion.
