Posse
The sheriff is entitled to enact posse comitatus. In 1847, when the posse comitatus act was signed into being, the U.S. Army could no longer be used in civil affairs as a tool for law enforcement.

This brought about the change where a Sheriff could temporarily Deputize a citizen. A citizen with no with not training or experience could band together with the Sheriff and find and arrest serious criminals. This is still true today. Missouri state statute 57.119 RSMO 1969 gives authority to the Sheriff to create a posse as well.

Today, in modern times the Sheriff can still use this law to create a posse of volunteers. While it is possible the posse will be used to hunt down bad guys, it is more likely that they will assist with day to day operations. A Posse member may be found organizing records, or assisting with search and rescue, or helping at the front desk, assisting in the jail, or a variety of other tasks. It is a great experience. If you want more information please call or stop by the Sheriff's Office to inquire. If you would like to sign up, please complete a job application.
