Q: How do I file a incident report?
A: You may call dispatch and request a deputy come to your location and complete a incident report with the deputy. Or you may come to the Sheriff's Office and request a Deputy to the lobby. Or you may complete an abbreviated report online, but we may request a full report when Deputies speak to you in person to follow up with your report.

A court date will be set up and both parties must attend and speak to a Judge. The Judge will determine if a full order of protection is necessary. The Sheriff's Office will enforce all active ex partes and orders of protection. You may also see Cassie in the victims advocate office on the 3rd floor.

A: Come into the Sheriff's Office lobby and we will walk you through that process. There is a small fee.

Q: How do I bond out my Inmate?
A: A bond has multiple options available. It can either typically be a handled by the Inmate if they have the money on hand, a associate of the Inmate or a Bail Bondsman. They often fall into one or a combination of five categories. A signature on recognizance bond. No Bond which means they must stay in jail until a Judge says otherwise. Cash, which means they can only be bonded out with cash. Or surety which means a bondsman puts up collateral. Or a combination of each. You may ask a staff member at the front desk in the lobby for assistance. Or reach out to a local bondsman.

Q: Inmate visitation information?
A: Visitation will be allowed in person and teleconference. Please view the Inmate information page for details.  Visitation is Sunday from 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM.

A: No, all inmate movements are confidential for security purposes.

Q: How do I put money on my Inmates books?
A: You can either use our online commissary or pay at the front desk in the lobby.

Q: My Inmate needs his medications. How can I get them to him?
A: If the inmate is booked with medications, they will receive them. While booking, we will ask about medications, and if they need them, we can arrange a visit to their Doctor and pharmacy to get new medications at the Inmate's expense. Or you may drop off medications at the lobby.
We will administer them based on the schedule on the label in that prescribed dose. Inmates may not have controlled substances. Inmates may not utilize marijuana in the jail setting. All medications will be verified by educated staff.

Q: Do Inmates have access to Clergy?
A: Yes. Inmates may attend a non-denominational service provided by local organizations. If a specific denomination wishes to participate, they may, and Inmates may decide independently if they wish to participate. Religious services are not required.

Q: Can my Inmate have a bible?
A: Yes. It is encouraged but not required. Bibles are available from the library, or they may be purchased through commissary. No outside bibles may be brought in, due to value, being personal property and likelihood of theft or it being damaged.

Q: I am worried about the safety of my Inmate. I have seen on TV and movies that guards and other inmates can be aggressive.
A: While it is true, some Inmates do behave aggressively at times. We have a variety of supervision methods from direct supervision, to surveillance systems, and call buttons, as well as regular patrols. There are rules established early on to Inmates about what is acceptable and not acceptable behavior. We also have a proven disciplinary process based on the rule or law violation to encourage Inmates to follow the rules.  We will always do our very best to ensure the safety of Inmates in our care.

Q: What if my Inmates car was towed during his arrest?
A: A tow sheet is completed for every towed vehicle. The information will be maintained by the Sheriff's Office, entered into a state system and reports management system. We can find the car if requested.

Q: Can you release the car to me?
A: Maybe. If the car and contents are evidence, then no. If the car was simply removed then yes, if the Inmate signs a release form. However, the fees for the towing and storage are dictated by and paid directly to the towing company.

Q: How are trustees chosen?
A: If available, we may temporarily house a federal trustee, but we may choose a local Inmate as well. They must not be in jail for a violent felony, no history of escape or attempted escape, no history of violence, have a useful skill such as maintenance or cooking, and our experience should show the Inmate appears trustworthy.

Q: If I am a sex offender, what do I need to register?
A: You should bring your previous paper work, correct change, and your identification.

Q: Something of mine was taken as property or evidence. How do I get it back?
A: If it is simply property (Example: Lost and found) come to the Sheriff's Office and provide some form of proof the item belongs to you. Give us your ID for documentation purposes and it will be released to you. Complete and return a release form. If it is evidence, the process is similar. However, with evidence the case either has to come to its final conclusion or the statute of limitations must expire.

Q: Does Shannon County Sheriff's Office have volunteer programs?
A: Yes the Sheriff's Office has a Posse program. A Posse member is a volunteer that assists the office with multiple non-law enforcement tasks. A Posse member has no lawful authority or powers of arrest. However, they can assist with administrative work, public relations, security, and assisting deputies with daily tasks. Posse members also get to do regular ride alongs with deputies and attend training meetings monthly. Please see the Posse web page for details.

Q: Does Shannon County Sheriff's Office have a citizens academy?
A: Yes. they will be held based on public interests.

Q: Can I do my concealed carry paperwork at the Sheriff's Office?
A: Yes. You may bring documentation provided by a valid instructor for processing. Please see the CCW page for details.

Q: Sometimes I see city officer in the county, and deputies in the city, why is that?
A: Peace officers are empowered by the state to enforce laws anywhere in the state. A city cop can pursue a subject out of their jurisdiction. However, it is customary to give the other jurisdiction notice they are there. The city may have an active case that requires leaving the city and that is fine. We all works as a team for the same goals.
As for deputies in the cities. A deputy may enforce laws anywhere in any area of their county. Additionally, some cities may choose to contract with the county for their law enforcement services. Meaning you may see us there on their behalf.

Q: Does Shannon County have a animal control officer?
A: Not at this time. However, depending on the circumstances, deputies are often accustomed to responding to animal calls.

Q: Can I call and give a anonymous tip?
A: Yes. We will investigate it to the best of our lawful abilities. However, an anonymous tip does not hold the same legal weight as a tip submitted with information. But it could lead us to other clues potentially.

Q: How do I know if a sex offender lives in my neighborhood? What should I do if one lives near me?
A: You may check our sex offender page for current information and a link to the MSHP registry map. You don't need to do anything. You may treat them like anyone else, or simply ignore them. If you feel concerned, follow the same methods of self awareness and protection you normally would if they are there or not.

Q: Do I have a right to self defense?
A: Yes. Every Citizen in the United States and Missouri have a right to self defense. With the exception of self defense is not legal, while in the commission of a crime. Please view this link for legal details. https://revisor.mo.gov/main/OneSection.aspx?section=563.031

Q: What laws do deputies enforce?
A: Deputies enforce all criminal and traffic laws that are codified in the Missouri Revised Statues Of Missouri.
https://revisor.mo.gov/main/OneTitle.aspx?title=XXXVIII

Q: Is the Sheriff's Office hiring?
A: We are constantly taking applications and filling both paid and volunteer positions. Please see our employment page for further details.

Q: I received a ticket, can I pay the deputy or the Sheriff's Office?
A: No. You may show up in court, and or call the number on the citation for further details and answers. Or visit the Shannon County Court Clerk at the Court House.

Q: Why does Shannon County have a swat team? This is Shannon County, do we really need all of that?
A: I wish it was that simple. It would be unreasonable for deputies to walk around everyday in full gear. So we scale back for patrol work. But it is an increasingly dangerous world. We want everyone to be as safe as possible, and give everyone the highest chance of survival. That is deputies, victims, hostages, innocent bystanders and even the subject. Because of this, we are not doing the county justice, by showing up unprepared to save lives. I promise you, our tactical team is designed with life saving goals in mind. We care about you and our community.

Q: Are Shannon County deputies any good?
A: You may be surprised to know that law enforcement officers in Missouri are very well educated in their field. Each deputy employed by SCSO has chosen to be a peace officer. They put their own money on the line and paid thousands of dollars to become certified. Additionally, the state of Missouri requires 24 hours of law enforcement credited education each year. But many of our deputies exceed this number, often into the hundreds of education hours. Each deputy is hand selected by the Sheriff for their years of excellent service, training and unique skills they bring to this office. You have subject matter experts in patrolling, drug detections, tactics, negotiations, community policing, K-9 services, and so much more. You are truly lucky to have such fine deputies.

Q: Do your K-9s do public appearances?
A: Yes. They are professional working dogs and as such they should never be touched or fed without the handlers permission. But yes, they can be seen at special events and are a joy to witness. Our K-9s are professionally trained and certified. These animals are commissioned deputies.

Q: Can your drug detection dogs trigger on marijuana?
A: No. In November 2022, marijuana became recreationally legal in Missouri. Therefore every dog who was trained to alert for marijuana had to be retired from service. All of our K-9s are acquired after the rule was passed, to avoid accidental alerts.

Q: How do I find out if I have a warrant for my arrest?
A: Come into the lobby with your ID card. We will check and notify you at that time. If you have a bond, it is advisable to bring cash.

Q: Can I do a property swap or sale, or custody exchange in your parking lot or lobby?
A: Yes. Please notify the front desk attendant of what you are doing to avoid confusion.

Q: How do I donate to the Sheriff's Office?
A: Please call or come into the lobby and inform the front desk attendant that you would like to speak to the Sheriff about a donation. We are thankful for the generosity of our citizens.
